Post Natal Depression

I write this not only as a Naturopath, but as a mother. I have found Post Natal Depression to be a deep and frightening corner of motherhood where many women hope to never find themselves. Perhaps you have experienced PND, or know someone who is? It is one of those intensely private journey's of motherhood few seem willing to share. We know it exists, but we hope it will not or does not happen to us. It seems PND is the benchmark for poor parenting, something that happens to 'other' mums. Is this a result of a multi-generational expectation that all mothers should be able to cope?
I believe PND is a very personal and individual experience. Some mother's depression will stem from a long term illness, other's find the transition into motherhood extremely emotional, and some mother's are surprised to find they have PND. The truth is that PND is very common, and women can suffer from it at any stage through motherhood. There are many ways to improve the wellbeing of someone with PND. Lifestyle, diet, stress, support, and various minerals and herbs to soothe and revitalise the nervous system. It is a management program and multi layered, and is a solid long term solution. If you know or suspect someone with PND, reach out - us mumma's are all in this together! If you are reading this with PND, feeling scared and alone, you are NOT! Reach out and ask for help.
