Progesterone Vs Oestrogen: Yin & Yang

Surely as women, you have heard many times the words "Oestrogen" and "Progesterone". They are part of a universe of hormonal harmony in each of us. However, how much do you really know about these powerful and health giving hormones that dictate so much of our womanly wellbeing?

Let's have it out!

Progesterone is a pro-gestation, pregnancy loving, baby hugging hormone. It favours the growth and well-being of the foetus. Without adequate progesterone, there can be no successful pregnancy. It also protects us against the "growth effects" of Oestrogen.

Oestrogen regulates the menstrual cycle, promotes cell division and is responsible for the development of puberty. Oestrogen affects all female sexual organs, including the ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and breast. As a general rule, it promotes cell growth, including signalling the growth of the blood-rich tissue of the uterus (menses); but it also lifts our mood and gives a feeling of well-being.

Progesterone acts as an antagonist to Oestrogen. For example, Oestrogen stimulates breast cysts while Progesterone protects against breast cysts. Oestrogen enhances salt and water retention while Progesterone is a natural diuretic. Oestrogen has been associated with breast and endometrial cancers, while Progesterone has a cancer preventive effect. Studies have shown that pre-menopausal women deficient in progesterone had 5.4 times the risk of breast cancer compared to healthy women.

Clinically, I see very few women who have this delicate and all important hormonal balance between Progesterone and Oestrogen. Whether it be for fertility, menstrual problems, or general wellbeing, these hormones are an intrinsic part of us. They command respect and deserve to be nurtured. Do not put off treating hormonal problems, the long term results can be damaging to your health and future.
